Meet the Member – Lynne Dow, SWOOSH
Name – Lynne Dow
Business Name – SWOOSH
Tell us about your business, the inspiration behind it, and when you launched it.
SWOOSH was launched in 2017. At the time I was working in tourism and wanted to provide cost-effective social media services and also websites (particularly with online booking!) to small owner-operator businesses who simply didn’t have the time or resources to do it themselves but were missing out on so many opportunities. My focus over time has shifted to mostly designing websites plus logos and branding.
What has been your biggest lesson or challenge faced so far, and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge – other than juggling 2 particularly feisty daughters – has been imposter-syndrome but the realisation that I can *really* help others with the skills and experience that I have is a huge motivator for me.
What is your number one business tip for success?
The business tip that has been most helpful for me is ‘just keep moving’. Sometimes the steps I take are baby ones (and occasionally in the wrong direction!) but as long as I’m learning and adapting I know that I will continue to succeed.
What are the big business goals for the next year?
In the coming year, I hope to build SWOOSH and fill my order book! Last year was tough as one of my children was in and out of hospital so I didn’t take on much new work so I’m excited to be back.
How can the GGC Business membership help?
I’m hoping that the GGC Business membership will open up new opportunities for SWOOSH but also for my personal growth – meet others, form collaborations and to keep learning.
What’s the dream?
The dream is to be a role-model for my children: to be there for them as they grow while also seeing their mum being successful in business.
What’s your favourite mantra to get you buzzed up for business?
A goal without a plan is just a wish
Shout out to another local business you admire.
Being a mum and being self-employed is not always the easiest of paths so I’d like to give a shout-out to my fellow mum-preneur Kate Galbally of ‘Better Organised’. She truly is the most organised person I know.
Give us three fun facts about you!
- I’m learning Gaelic (my mum’s a native speaker)
- I’ve climbed Mount Kilimanjaro
- I enjoy repairing walls with lime mortar!
